James Long built the home in 1865, he was the owner of the original Sunshine biscuit factory across the road, and the home was called ‘Long Wood’. He lived in a tent under Miners Rights prior to building the home. Once the home was complete he lived at 71 Victoria Street with his wife Mary and 8 of his children (there were 11 children but only 8 had survived). James was also Mayor of Ballarat East, and Justice of the Peace and also involved in the Ballarat East Orphanage for many years. James retired in Portland for his remaining years.
